FEASTING TOP FIVE GUIDE · The Weekly Five

I'd drive 2 hours back for these 5 meals: regional Queensland

When you leave the city limits behind, Queensland's regional towns have a brilliant habit of turning routine driving breaks into memorable dining stops. From Central Queensland down to the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the Lockyer Valley, carving out time for regional road stops reveals local bakers, market stalls, roasteries, and annual food festivals that easily justify the drive.

Whether you are pulling up for a hot meat pie along the Brisbane Valley Highway or grazing through street food stalls at Eumundi, these five regional spots prove that Queensland's best food memories often happen well outside metropolitan limits.

01 · Rockhampton, Queensland

Start with cheesecake by the quay: Riverston Tea Rooms, Rockhampton

Breaking up a tropical Central Queensland road trip with a food detour through Rockhampton turned a long drive into a surprisingly balanced day out. We started our morning over at Riverston Tea Rooms along Quay Street, where the glass cabinet treats immediately took centre stage. I ordered a thick slice of cheesecake served on a white plate with a generous dollop of whipped cream, sitting back against a leafy green backdrop that set a relaxed, tropical tone. It is the kind of quiet, leafy pitstop that makes you want to slow your pace right down before hitting the highway towards the botanical gardens.

Breaking up a tropical Queensland road trip with a food detour through Rockhampton turns a long drive into a surprisingly varied day out. On our trip through Central Queensland, we carved out time to taste our way through three very different local spots, jumping from morning baked treats to lush palm-shaded paths and finishing at a busy microbrewery table.

Rockhampton delivers an easy, rewarding road trip detour, balancing sweet tea room slices and lush garden paths with a hearty brewery lunch.

Build a progressive market lunch: The Original Eumundi Markets, Sunshine Coast

Taking a two-hour drive north from the south side of Brisbane brought me straight to Eumundi for a morning grazing run across the market grounds. I kicked things off at Iinaa Japanese Food with a hot cabbage okonomiyaki topped with teriyaki chicken, which gave me a rich, comforting anchor before weaving through the busy aisles. Over at Gozleme Culture, I watched folded flatbreads cook fresh on the hotplate, generously stuffed with beef, spinach, garlic yoghurt, and a sharp squeeze of lemon. I rounded out the market walk with a cold Ginger Zinger juice packed with carrot, orange, pineapple, and ginger for a bright contrast.

Pouch the pup and order rhubarb toast: Gun Cotton Coffee Roasters, Yandina

The smell of fresh-roasted coffee pulled us in from Railway Street in Yandina, right off the highway roughly an hour north of Brisbane. Inside, beneath exposed timber rafters, a large commercial roaster churns freshly roasted beans into the cooling tray while you settle into the dog-friendly dining space. We filled our table with the nostalgic Rhubarb French Toast, cut through with poached rhubarb, strawberry slices, crumble, and cream. On the savoury side, The Smashed Green with a crispy golden hash brown hit the mark, paired alongside an iced Tiramisu Cloud coffee topped with thick whipped cream and cocoa powder.

The smell of fresh-roasted coffee pulled us in from the street, but it was the brunch spread that made us stay. Located right off the highway in Yandina, roughly an hour north of Brisbane, Gun Cotton Coffee Roasters quickly turns a routine road-trip coffee stop into a proper destination.

An ideal road-trip stop in Yandina where house-roasted coffee aromas, nostalgic brunch dishes, and a dog-friendly setting make slowing down easy.

04 · Fernvale, Queensland

Get in line for flaky pastry: Old Fernvale Bakery, Fernvale

Stepping up to Old Fernvale Bakery along the Brisbane Valley Highway, the queue was already weaving past cabinets filled with fresh cream buns and apple strudels. I went straight for my go-to savoury order: the chunky steak, cheese, and bacon pie served hot on baking paper. The pastry crust was exceptionally light, flaky, and fresh, giving way to rich gravy packed with meat and melted cheese. For something sweet, we tried the novelty of a Vietnamese iced coffee lamington with its coffee-cream center, but my heart stays with their classic fresh cream and jam doughnut, generously piped with whipped cream.

The line was stretching almost out the door when we arrived at Old Fernvale Bakery along the Brisbane Valley Highway. Above the entrance, the signage proudly promises pies, breads, cakes, and sandwiches, and stepping inside to see a queue weaving past display cabinets filled with fresh cream buns, M&M doughnuts, and apple strudels, it was immediately clear why this roadside spot stays so popular.

Lawn music and sparkling red: Festival of Food and Wine, Toowoomba

Stepping under the archways into Queens Park in Toowoomba, the Festival of Food and Wine sets a bright picnic mood with white tables and umbrellas spread across the grass. My favourite sweet discovery was a cinnamon-dusted Hungarian Langos topped with cream, fresh berries, and chocolate syrup. Grazing past local producer stalls showcasing regional cheeses and spirits, stopping at Heritage Estate Wines yielded my best takeaway of the day: a bottle of their Velvet red sparkling wine, ideal for warm weather sipping. As dusk fell, an illuminated canopy lit up the park, making a gentle stroll a memorable finale.

Finding a cinnamon-dusted Hungarian Langos topped with cream, fresh berries, and chocolate syrup was my favourite sweet moment at the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Festival of Food & Wine. Passing through the floral entrance decorated with 'Let's Party' lettering and under the welcoming 'FOOD & WINE!' archway, the festival immediately sets an upbeat, celebratory mood in Toowoomba.

The Festival of Food & Wine brings together some of Queensland's finest regional pours and food stalls in a picturesque outdoor festival setting.
