Fernvale Bakery Spotlights
Old Fernvale Bakery: Roadside Pies and Sweet Pastry Favourites
Old Fernvale Bakery delivers standout regional baking, backed by an exceptionally light and flaky pie crust and a fresh cream and jam doughnut that makes any pitstop in Fernvale worthwhile.

The line was stretching almost out the door when we arrived at Old Fernvale Bakery along the Brisbane Valley Highway. Above the entrance, the signage proudly promises pies, breads, cakes, and sandwiches, and stepping inside to see a queue weaving past display cabinets filled with fresh cream buns, M&M doughnuts, and apple strudels, it was immediately clear why this roadside spot stays so popular.
We could not resist stopping in for a travel break to check out their selection alongside a few sweet treats, taking a seat outside under the shade of an umbrella.
Is Old Fernvale Bakery worth adding to your itinerary?
On the sweet side, we got to try the Vietnamese iced coffee lamington, a neat square cake finely coated in coconut. Cut in half, it revealed a light brown coffee-cream filling layer. I liked the novelty of the iced coffee twist, though it probably would not replace my top choice.

Flaky Pastry and the Go-To Meat Pie
I went straight for my usual savoury order, the chunky steak, cheese and bacon pie. Served hot on baking paper, the pastry crust set the standard right from the very first bite. It was exceptionally light, flaky, and fresh, giving way to a rich gravy packed with chunky meat and melted cheese. In my opinion, it is one of the best pies around, offering the exact kind of comforting bakery quality that rewards a road trip.
Coffee Twists and Pure Jam-and-Cream Joy

When it comes to my absolute favourite, my go-to is definitely the fresh cream and jam doughnut. Sliced open and piped generously with whipped cream and sweet jam, it is a simple, classic bakery treat that brings pure joy before getting back on the road.
