FEASTING TOP FIVE GUIDE · Save these for a special occasion
I'd book these 5 tables for a special occasion: Brisbane to Bali
Five standout dining spots from Brisbane to Bali worth booking for a special occasion, featuring cave degustations, wood-fired feasts, and private lounges.
When a meal is meant to mark a moment, the dining room should do more than just feed you. Whether you are celebrating a milestone, an anniversary, or simply gathering a group of favourite human beings, a great special occasion spot offers distinct mood, thoughtful hospitality, and food that stops conversation at the table.
From an ancient subterranean cave in Uluwatu to a hidden vinyl lounge in Brisbane City, these five destinations across Australia and Bali turn dinner into a genuinely memorable event. Here is where to book when you want the setting, the service, and every dish to feel extraordinary.
01 · Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia
Dine inside an ancient cavern: The Cave, Uluwatu
Descending into a 25,000-year-old natural cavern beneath The Edge Resort sets a dramatic stage before the first dish arrives. At The Cave by Chef Ryan Clift, candlelit booths seat just 22 guests against raw rock walls while light projections pulse across the subterranean ceiling. The multi-course degustation pairs open-kitchen craftsmanship with tableside theatre, from compressed hand towels expanded at the table to smoking dry ice vapour scooped into martini glasses. Between delicate tartlets garnished with pea purée and interactive desserts featuring rolled tuiles crushed over apple purée, this underground dining room in Uluwatu turns a milestone meal into an unforgettable sensory event.
Stepping subterranean into a 25,000-year-old natural cave set beneath The Edge Resort in Uluwatu redefines what a degustation dinner in Bali can feel like. The venue, known as The Cave by Chef Ryan Clift, transforms an ancient geological chamber into an intimate 22-seat dining room where candlelit tables rest against raw subterranean rock face.
Dining inside a 25,000-year-old natural cave in Uluwatu is a remarkable experience, where Chef Ryan Clift pairs theatrical multi-course degustation plates with dynamic rock projections, open kitchen drama and intimate 22-seat service.
What I’d start with: Multi-course degustation menu by Chef Ryan Clift.

Step into a lush tropical sanctuary: Merah Putih, Kerobokan
Stepping into Merah Putih feels like entering a soaring tropical greenhouse, where tall palm trees stretch toward high glass ceilings. We booked a table for dinner during our Bali trip, taking in the dramatic scale and under-lit marble bar before diving into the menu. The kitchen balances traditional Indonesian flavours with playful presentations, serving steamed bao buns filled with braised meat alongside medium-rare beef steak with banana-leaf rice. Paired with creative cocktails and attentive staff who navigate dietary requirements with absolute care, this Kerobokan sanctuary delivers an effortless sense of occasion wrapped in lush architecture.
Stepping into Merah Putih feels less like entering a standard restaurant and more like walking into a luxury tropical greenhouse. Tall indoor palm trees stretch toward soaring glass ceilings, flanked by glass walls and lush greenery that immediately set the scene for a special night out in Bali.
Merah Putih delivers a memorable Bali dinner experience, combining spectacular tropical architecture, friendly service that takes dietary needs seriously, and a colourful, flavourful menu.
What I’d start with: Cocktails featuring traditional and unique flavour combinations..

Toast with wood-fired yakitori: Shōbōsho, Adelaide
Toasting our honeymoon in Adelaide brought us to Shōbōsho, where icy Flustered Pineapple cocktails landed on warm timber tables beside red chopsticks and folded napkins. The kitchen masterfully blends wood-fired heat, smoke, and fermenting techniques across its dedicated yakitori pit and hydraulic grill. We loved starting with crunchy nori crisps and pan-fried dumplings dipped in rich sesame sauce before moving to the main event: a dark ceramic bowl heaped with tender sliced roasted pork over scallion-flecked fried rice. Deeply comforting and packed with smoke and craft, it remains a standout celebration table on Leigh Street.
Toasting our honeymoon in Adelaide brought us to Shobosho, where two icy cocktail drinks landed on the warm timber table alongside our red chopsticks and folded cloth napkins.
Shobosho delivers a memorable Adelaide dining experience with lively cocktails, textured bites, and comforting shared dishes suited for special occasions.
What I’d start with: Flustered Pineapple cocktail, Umeshu Spritz.

Skip the starters for a 500g steak: Rich & Rare, West End
Set along Boundary Street in West Village, Rich & Rare marries classic steakhouse polish with generous precinct dining. I visited as an invited guest and quickly learned that pacing is everything here. While the wagyu croquettes and wood-fired camembert are tempting, saving room for the 500g bavette MB5+ steak is essential. Plated medium-rare with a dark seared crust and poured over with warm peppercorn sauce alongside golden wagyu-fat potatoes, the beef is a showstopper. Just be sure to bypass heavy starters so you can conquer the Valrhona chocolate delice with hazelnuts and ice cream at the end.
I am never ordering entrees from Rich & Rare again, and I mean that in the best possible way. The kitchen at this West End venue does not hold back on portion sizes, and after sitting down to an expansive spread that spanned rich wagyu starters, a substantial steak main, and two full desserts, I walked away completely stuffed. There was so much food on the table that pacing became the ultimate challenge of the dining experience.
Rich & Rare lives up to its name with generous, rich dishes ranging from a 500g MB5+ steak to wood-fired camembert, but saving room for the standout Valrhona chocolate delice is the ultimate insider strategy.
What I’d start with: Wagyu Croquette ($24), Stone Axe Wagyu Tatami ($38), Wood-fired Camembert ($31).

Press the martini button: The Listening Lounge, Brisbane City
Hidden behind a heavy curtain on level one of W Brisbane, The Listening Lounge transforms group celebrations into a private, sound-focused ritual. We waited almost three months for our booking, stepping into a moody room filled with plush seating, vinyl shelves, and a red glowing button labelled 'PRESS FOR MARTINI'. Selecting our own soundtrack while sipping butterfly pea and yuzu cocktails set a playful tone for the night. Shared plates like whipped feta topped with fig and caramelised pecans alongside gluten-free grazing bites make hosting effortless, giving 6 to 18 guests an exclusive city escape.
