Ipswich Dining
Why Ipswich's Refreshed Hotel Commonwealth Is Worth the Trip for Roast Chicken Butter
The revamped Hotel Commonwealth delivers a sensational pub feed in Ipswich, elevated by thoughtful touches like house-made roast chicken butter.

A loaf of bread served with butter rarely steals the spotlight at a pub feed, but the roast chicken butter at Hotel Commonwealth in Ipswich is an absolute standout. Served alongside a sliced mini cob and topped with crispy savoury crumbs, this tub of rich butter brings incredible roast-chicken depth to every bite. It is the kind of clever touch that instantly sets the tone for a great meal.
Located on Union Place in Ipswich, the historic venue has recently undergone a major refurbishment. The fresh look across the dining spaces, beer garden and cocktail bar breathes new energy into the pub while honoring its classic charm.

The kitchen backs up the stylish setting with satisfying pub classics. I ordered the cheeseburger, which arrived layered with melted cheese, sliced pickles and sauce on a toasted bun, accompanied by a generous side of french fries.

A Fresh Look Across the Dining Spaces
Inside, the design update brings polished contrast to the character building. Patterned tiled floors sit against exposed brick walls, with warm pendant lighting glowing above dark tables and grey seating.
Along the main bar section, black stools frame a long counter backed by glass drink fridges, beer taps and rows of spirits. The layout feels open and well considered, whether you are stopping by for a cold beer or settling in for dinner.
Pub Favourites Done Right

My partner went for the grilled steak, topped with compound butter and served alongside french fries and a dressed lettuce wedge salad. Everything on our table was delicious and well cooked.
While a reliable burger and steak make for a great feed, starting with that roast chicken butter is what truly makes the trip memorable. I would head back to Hotel Commonwealth any day of the week just to get my hands on it again.
