Self-Serve Soft Gelato in Newstead
Skip the scoops for this creamy self-serve: Luma Gelato, Newstead
Luma brings an interactive self-serve soft gelato experience to Newstead, combining remarkably creamy soft bases with a well-stocked topping bar that lets you customise every spoonful.

Pulling smooth soft gelato straight from a self-serve machine adds a playful, interactive touch to a dessert run, and Luma in Newstead delivers a texture that is far creamier than expected. Situated at Gasworks along Skyring Terrace, this self-dispensing gelato boutique gives you complete control over your bowl from the initial pour to the final sprinkle.
Stepping into the bright, pastel space, the setup immediately sets itself apart from standard scooped cabinets. Instead of pointing through glass at pre-portioned tubs, you grab a paper cup labeled Luma Gelato Boutique and navigate the soft gelato levers and topping station at your own pace.
Whether you are stopping by for a lunchtime treat, meeting friends after work, or finishing an evening in Newstead, the self-serve format makes customising your dessert simple and engaging. The fun lies in balancing soft gelato bases with contrasting textures and drizzles.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Menu highlights
Highlights from Zen’s visit.
At a glance: what we ordered
- Custom gelato cup with hazelnut and strawberries and cream gelato, mini cone, fresh strawberries, raspberry crumble, hazelnuts, chocolate flakes, and chocolate drizzle
- Mango sorbet with sour cherries
Building a Hazelnut and Strawberry Base
The build begins at the soft gelato machines, where you choose your flavours and pull the levers to dispense the bases directly into your cup.
I swirled two bases together, combining a rich hazelnut gelato with a bright strawberries and cream soft gelato.
Controlling the flow allowed me to layer the smooth hazelnut against the sweet berry cream, creating a balanced foundation before stepping over to the customisation counter.
The topping station features polished brass bowls filled with dry ingredients and sweet drizzles. Using golden tongs, I placed a crisp mini waffle cone upright into the gelato. I then added a spoon of fresh sliced strawberries, a light dusting of pink raspberry crumble, crunchy chopped hazelnuts from the labeled bowl, fine chocolate flakes, and a generous dark chocolate drizzle across the top. Taking a bite, the gelato proved way creamier than I expected from a machine dispensing soft gelato, with the crunch of the mini cone and nuts giving every mouthful structure.
Pairing Mango Sorbet with Sour Cherries
For a fruit-focused option, Luma also offers vibrant sorbet options from its self-serve machines.
We poured a base of bright yellow mango sorbet into a new cup and headed across to the topping station to pick a suitable pairing.
Instead of adding more sweet tropical toppings, we finished the sorbet with dark cherries lifted from a bowl marked Sour Cherry Jam.
The tart sour cherries cut sharply through the sweet, tropical mango base, creating an elite combination that highlights how effective thoughtful topping choices can be.
