Upstairs in West Village in West End, there is a Thai restaurant Brisbane has been walking straight past. Vela Kinn sits perched above the precinct pavement, marked by an illuminated exterior neon sign that draws you upstairs via stairs or lift.

Step inside and the room opens into a warm, inviting dining space filled with cushioned booth seating, drum lamps, and seated diners. It feels tailor-made for date nights, catch-ups with friends, or a lively group celebration.

The immediate visual center of the room is the bar, where a giant illuminated moon prop with Vela branding hangs overhead. Settling underneath that glowing moon, we started with a Pina Colada brought out in a sculpted tiki ceramic mug with a pineapple wedge, cherry, and paper umbrella, alongside a Kinn Martini, fresh coconut, and Thai milk tea. It creates an upbeat backdrop before any food even hits the table, especially for anyone looking for gluten-free Thai in West End.

Glazed Ribs and Crispy Eggplant Bites

What immediately sets the menu apart is how heavily it caters to gluten-free dining without compromising on texture or crunch. We ordered the crispy eggplant for eighteen dollars, served in bite-sized pieces over Vela-branded paper alongside a dark dipping sauce. Biting into a piece reveals a light, crispy fried coating that yields smoothly into a hot center, making it an easy favorite to kick off the table.

Next came the tamarind pork ribs for nineteen dollars, another gluten-free highlight. Picked up by hand, each glazed rib carries a distinct crust that cracks when you bite into it, finished with a glossy caramelised topping and herbs. For tablemates not restricted by gluten, the satay beef skewers for fifteen dollars deliver grilled skewers with rich peanut sauce, marked as the single savoury item on the table containing gluten.

Massaman Curry and High Noodle Swirls

Mains at Vela Kinn lean into satisfying Thai comfort dishes with distinct touches. The Massaman beef curry arrives at thirty-one dollars with a rich, aromatic sauce, accompanied by a generous scoop of smooth mashed potato right in the bowl. Lifting a spoon delivers tender beef, potato, and curry sauce in one comforting bite, paired naturally with a seven-dollar bowl of coconut rice.

The twenty-eight dollar chicken pad thai is equally compelling for noodle fans. Served on a dark ceramic plate, lifting chopsticks through the dish pulls up a tall, steaming swirl of noodles evenly coated in sweet-savory sauce. It is executed with proper stir-fry heat and happens to be completely gluten-free.

A Decadent Banoffee Toast Finale

While savoury dishes cater effortlessly to gluten-free guests, dessert turns in a rich, buttery direction that contains gluten. We finished with the fifteen-dollar banoffee toast, presented on a dark plate as a thick slice of golden toasted bread loaded with caramelised banana slices, toffee sauce, whipped cream, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream dusted with cocoa.

Pressing a knife down through the warm toast releases melted toffee and cold ice cream across the plate. Taking a bite of warm caramelised banana, cold cream, and crisp crust makes saving room at the end of the meal non-negotiable.
