Don't drive past Yandina's French toast: five Queensland road stops

From flaky meat pies in Fernvale to fresh-roasted hinterland coffee and street-food grazing, here are five Queensland detours worth taking.

By Zen · Five places, one story

A great Queensland drive should never be defined solely by the kilometres covered. Choosing to bypass standard highway petrol stations in favour of local bakehouses, roasteries, and street markets turns a routine haul into a memorable dining journey.

Whether you are heading north along the coast or turning inland toward the hinterland, these five stops offer clear reasons to pull off the main road, stretch your legs, and enjoy something genuinely well made.

01 · Rockhampton, Queensland

Riverston Tea Rooms: A Sweet Tropical Break in Rockhampton

Breaking up a long Central Queensland drive becomes instantly more peaceful when you pull into Riverston Tea Rooms on Quay Street in Rockhampton. Stepping in for a morning pitstop, the cabinet treats take main stage. Sitting down with a thick slice of cheesecake served on a white plate with a generous dollop of whipped cream, the leafy green backdrop sets a delightfully relaxed tropical tone. It is the exact kind of quiet, sweet interlude that encourages you to slow down and catch your breath before heading back out onto the highway or strolling through the nearby botanical gardens.

Breaking up a tropical Queensland road trip with a food detour through Rockhampton turns a long drive into a surprisingly varied day out. On our trip through Central Queensland, we carved out time to taste our way through three very different local spots, jumping from morning baked treats to lush palm-shaded paths and finishing at a busy microbrewery table.

Rockhampton delivers an easy, rewarding road trip detour, balancing sweet tea room slices and lush garden paths with a hearty brewery lunch.

The Original Eumundi Markets: A Progressive Market Grazing Route

Driving up from Brisbane to The Original Eumundi Markets turns a routine highway trip into an exceptional stall-by-stall grazing route. Operating Wednesday and Saturday mornings, this market space is built around handmade and locally made goods. I like to kick off a visit with a hot, comforting cabbage pancake topped with teriyaki chicken from Iinaa Japanese Food, followed by Gozleme Culture's folded beef and spinach flatbread finished with garlic yoghurt and fresh lemon. Pairing those warm savoury plates with a cold Ginger Zinger juice packed with carrot, orange, pineapple, and ginger creates a complete street-food lunch while wandering through the aisles.

Taking a two-hour road trip north from the south side of Brisbane brings you straight to Eumundi, where the iconic town market grounds turn a morning drive into a relaxed stall-by-stall tasting route. First established in 1979, this long-standing gathering spot has championed regional artisans and community spirit for decades, steadily growing into a major regional attraction for day-trippers.

Taking the two-hour drive from Brisbane to Eumundi Markets rewards you with a great grazing feast, pairing hot teriyaki chicken okonomiyaki and spinach-beef gozleme with cold carrot, orange, pineapple and ginger juice.

What I’d start with: Ginger Zinger juice, Teriyaki chicken okonomiyaki, Beef and spinach gozleme.

Gun Cotton Coffee Roasters: House-Roasts and Nostalgic Brunch in Yandina

Just off the highway in Yandina, Gun Cotton Coffee Roasters immediately draws you in with the aroma of beans tumbling through the cooling tray of their commercial roaster right next door. Inside, under exposed timber rafters, the space is airy and welcoming, even for dogs tucked safely into chest carriers. The food elevates a routine coffee run into a true destination. The nostalgic Rhubarb French Toast hits a lovely balance with poached rhubarb, fresh strawberries, crumble, and cream. Paired with a smooth oat latte or a luxurious iced Tiramisu Cloud, it makes slowing down on a Sunshine Coast trip effortless.

The smell of fresh-roasted coffee pulled us in from the street, but it was the brunch spread that made us stay. Located right off the highway in Yandina, roughly an hour north of Brisbane, Gun Cotton Coffee Roasters quickly turns a routine road-trip coffee stop into a proper destination.

An ideal road-trip stop in Yandina where house-roasted coffee aromas, nostalgic brunch dishes, and a dog-friendly setting make slowing down easy.

04 · Fernvale, Queensland

Old Fernvale Bakery: Flaky Meat Pies and Classic Cream Buns

Following the Brisbane Valley Highway leads right to the queue outside Old Fernvale Bakery, where display cabinets are packed tight with traditional sweets and hot pies. My go-to savoury pick is the chunky steak, cheese, and bacon pie. Served hot on baking paper, its light, flaky pastry crust gives way to a rich gravy loaded with chunky meat and melted cheese. To round off the stop before jumping back behind the wheel, nothing brings simple joy like their fresh cream and jam doughnut, generously piped with whipped cream and sweet jam for a classic bakery reward.

The line was stretching almost out the door when we arrived at Old Fernvale Bakery along the Brisbane Valley Highway. Above the entrance, the signage proudly promises pies, breads, cakes, and sandwiches, and stepping inside to see a queue weaving past display cabinets filled with fresh cream buns, M&M doughnuts, and apple strudels, it was immediately clear why this roadside spot stays so popular.

Old Fernvale Bakery delivers standout regional baking, backed by an exceptionally light and flaky pie crust and a fresh cream and jam doughnut that makes any pitstop in Fernvale worthwhile.

Famous Yatala Pies: Golden Savoury Crusts and Sweet Cream Slices

A classic highway staple on the Old Pacific Highway, Famous Yatala Pies balances hot savoury cabinets with cool displays of sweet baked treats. Ordering the cheese and bacon pie means diving into a hot, round pastry capped completely in melted cheese and scattered bacon bits. The cheese and bacon sausage roll gets the same golden treatment right on its top crust. For the finish, a slice of apple and cream pie served in a foil tray brings stewed apples, a billowy mound of whipped cream, and a dusting of sugar that stays wonderfully balanced without being overly sweet.

Stepping past the welcome sign at Famous Yatala Pies, it is easy to see why so many pastry lovers regard this venue as a true Australian icon. To experience what makes the bakery such a staple, we ordered a savoury combination of their cheese and bacon pie alongside the cheese and bacon sausage roll.

Famous Yatala Pies lives up to its iconic reputation with generous savoury options and an apple and cream pie that delivers just the right amount of sweetness.

What I’d start with: Cheese and bacon sausage roll, Cheese and bacon pie, Apple and cream pie.
