Stepping past the welcome sign at Famous Yatala Pies, it is easy to see why so many pastry lovers regard this venue as a true Australian icon. To experience what makes the bakery such a staple, we ordered a savoury combination of their cheese and bacon pie alongside the cheese and bacon sausage roll.
The counter area sets the stage by celebrating both ends of the pie spectrum, balancing warming hot food shelves on one side with cool glass display cabinets brimming with baked treats on the other.

The heated display shelves hold neat rows of freshly baked savoury pies and quiches waiting under the warm lights. The cheese and bacon sausage roll comes served on brown wrapping paper, crowned with a layer of melted cheese and crispy bacon pieces baked straight into the top pastry crust.
Beside it, the cheese and bacon pie sits in its own round takeaway cardboard box. The top of the pie is completely capped in melted cheese and scattered bacon bits, offering a hearty crunch and classic savoury richness with every single slice.

We ended our meal on a sweet note with a slice of the apple and cream pie. Presented in a foil tray, the pie features a stewed apple base topped with a billowy mound of whipped cream and a light dusting of powdered sugar. As noted during our visit, it hits an ideal sweetness level by being not too sweet, just delicious.
