Ballarat has some really cute little cafes now, and stepping into Johnny Alloo immediately sets a welcoming mood. Wooden counter lettering set against an exposed brick wall greets you right at the front, opening up into a light-filled dining space with warm timber tables and chairs.

Before even picking a table, the pastry cabinet demands a moment of complete attention. The glass display cabinet is stocked with almond croissants, glazed pastries, muffins, and filled donuts. They looked so incredible that I was definitely eating them with my eyes before sitting down.

Fireside warmth and all-day brunch

One of the best features of the cafe is its fireplace, where you can sit right beside the hearth to stay toasty and warm, which is exactly what you want when spending time in Ballarat. Paired with an all-day brunch menu, the cozy setup makes it easy to take your time and settle in properly for breakfast.

Our breakfast spread was delicious, enjoyed alongside a hot beverage finished with neat latte art. The Tradesman ($17.00) is a satisfying roll packed with a fried egg, thick-cut bacon, melted Swiss cheese, aioli, and tomato chutney.

For something built on sourdough, the Eggs Benedict ($26.00) features poached eggs layered with savoury Salt Kitchen jamón, hollandaise, and a bright streak of salsa verde, finished with a fresh lemon wedge on the side.
