Walking past vineyard rows under an overcast sky with a Penfolds umbrella in hand, Penfolds Magill Estate immediately reveals its deep roots in South Australian wine history. We started our private tour at the original white cottage with its bright red trim, set amongst green lawns right near the vines in Magill.

Inside the historic cottage, the rooms are preserved to reflect its nineteenth-century origins. We walked through living and working spaces outfitted with period furniture, patterned bedding in the bedroom, a vintage armchair by French doors, a dining table set with a floral centrepiece, and an office desk laden with books and an old leather bag.

At a glance: the experience

  • Private tasting of premium Penfolds wines

Through the Working Brick Cellars

Beyond the cottage, the tour steps straight into the active winemaking facilities and heritage cellars. Green timber doors marked Magill Cellar 3 lead into production spaces where overhead catwalks span red fermentation tanks, before giving way to subterranean brick pathways. Historic archways stamped 'CIRCA 1890' at Cellar 6 open into corridors with stacked oak barrels marked 'MPGFO12' alongside massive wooden wine vats.

Walking past giant wooden vats in these cool underground spaces gives the winemaking process an enduring physical presence. In Cellar 20, a long dining table set beneath glowing red arches against the brick wall shows how these working cellar spaces connect history with modern hospitality.
