When a ceramic dish of escargot topped with golden baked croutons arrives at the table, it sets a clear statement for the meal. Ordering snails might pause some diners, but here the dish is executed so classically and presented so nicely that it instantly makes Brisbane feel like a little slice of Paris.

Set inside The Star Brisbane, Pompette creates an atmosphere that is moody, cosy and tailor-made for date night. We settled in at a table set with a lit candle and pepper grinder, raising our glasses to kick off an evening of classic French cooking.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Is Pompette worth adding to your itinerary?

The drinks menu matches the kitchen's attention to detail. We toasted with Le Pompette, a lavender-hued coupe cocktail enjoyed in front of the venue's Veuve Clicquot artwork wall, and the Eden mocktail, a tall glass filled with lychee and fresh mint.

Classic Bistro Comforts

We began with starters that set a rich, indulgent tone right away. The soupe à l’oignon arrived baked with a caramelised top, melted cheese and fresh herbs, where pulling up a spoon of bubbling cheese delivered pure comfort. Beside it, foie gras was served on crisp brioche toast with citrus gel and fruit, creating a neat balance of rich and bright flavours.

For the main course, the gnocchi à la Parisienne arrived with sautéed mushrooms, fresh herbs and grated cheese, yielding a soft and cheesy bite. We also tried the steak baguette lunch special, a generous sandwich served alongside crisp french fries that made for a deeply satisfying option.

Theatrical Desserts and Signature Cocktails

The drinks menu matches the kitchen's attention to detail. We toasted with Le Pompette, a lavender-hued coupe cocktail enjoyed in front of the venue's Veuve Clicquot artwork wall, and the Eden mocktail, a tall glass filled with lychee and fresh mint.

Dessert turned the evening into a proper spectacle. A burning sparkler candle accompanied our sweet course, where the torched Bombe Alaska in a metal coupe was a full head-turning moment. Alongside it, the chocolate cherry mousse was detailed with delicate chocolate filigree lattices and a branded white chocolate plaque, sending us off into the night with a takeaway paper bag in hand.
