Charcoal Flame Grilling and Table Ordering at Ren Yakiniku Sunnybank

Ren Yakiniku in Sunnybank delivers an engaging Japanese barbecue experience where you order straight from a table tablet and grill over live charcoal flames.

The heat hits as soon as the team ignites the charcoal pit with a gas torch, turning coals into bright flames right under the grill mesh. At Ren Yakiniku on McCullough Street in Sunnybank, cooking over real charcoal fire brings a distinct smoky flavour that you can actually taste as you grill at your own pace.

Ordering straight from the digital tablet at our table was a completely new experience for me, with every dish served directly to us. Sitting at a wooden booth beneath overhead extraction pipes and wall artwork, we could focus on the fire and sharing dishes with the crew.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Is REN Yakiniku worth adding to your itinerary?

When thin slices of raw beef hit the hot grid, live flames flare up through the mesh to sear the meat. I wrapped the smoky grilled beef inside a crisp, fresh lettuce leaf for a bite that really highlights why real charcoal makes all the difference.

At a glance: what we ordered

  • Karaage chicken
  • Pokka Ice Peach Tea (complimentary social media drink perk)

Quick Starters and Table Sides

I always start with a few quick bites, and the karaage chicken did not disappoint. We dipped the crispy fried pieces straight into sauce while a small foil cup of corn cheese sat on the grill grid, bubbling into warm, stretchy cheese that lifted smoothly with a spoon.

The table quickly filled up with raw beef cuts, sauces, and side dishes. A bowl of crisp cabbage kimchi and a plate of seasoned raw beef yukhoe, topped with fresh green onions and sesame seeds, added a delicious variety to the feast.

There is also a fun trick to know before you visit: if you post your barbecue pictures on social media, tag the venue, and show the staff, you receive a free non-alcoholic drink. We got a cold can of Pokka Ice Peach Tea, which was the ideal sweet refresher alongside the rich charcoal grill meats.
