If you are the friend who takes forty-five minutes to decide where to eat, wandering into The Village Centre in Kelvin Grove gives you an immediate way out of the debate. Standing on the open concourse along Musk Avenue, right around the corner from QUT, you can scan past exterior menu boards and signage for quick sushi and Thai dishes before committing to a spot. My friend and I were catching up for a long overdue lunch, looking for somewhere straightforward where we could take our time, grab a substantial meal, and follow it up with something sweet without leaving the block.

Having multiple options gathered into one walkable precinct makes an informal catch-up effortless. Between two hours of free undercover parking and direct public transport links, the centre operates as a practical hub for students, locals, and anyone meeting up between commitments. Rather than debating back and forth across town, we picked two specific stops inside the precinct to turn our lunch catch-up into a seamless two-course outing: Golden Lava Toast for hot loaded sandwiches, followed by Yozo for custom frozen yogurt.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Is The Village Centre worth adding to your itinerary?

Beyond the current sweet menu, Yozo is also preparing to introduce a new cold foam range alongside cold brew on tap at the Kelvin Grove store, matching what they have already rolled out at their other location. It adds another solid reason to keep this corner of the complex in mind when you need an icy caffeine pick-me-up between errands.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Experience highlights

The details to look out for in Zen’s experience.

At a glance: the experience

  • Cuddly Bacon and black pepper beef stuffed toasts with a side hash brown from Golden Lava Toast
  • Jasmine green tea, mango cheese foam, or fruit mango tea from Golden Lava Toast
  • Custom frozen yogurt cup with scoopable Ferrero Dubai chocolate, warm chocolate sauce, and fresh strawberries from Yozo

Loaded Korean-style sandwiches at Golden Lava Toast

Walking into Golden Lava Toast under its bright interior neon sign, the overhead digital menu displays a deep selection of thick Korean-style stuffed toasts, milk teas, bubble teas, and sweet pastries like croissants. Stuffed sandwiches sit around $15 each, while drinks range from $6 to $10 depending on your chosen flavours and add-ins. It offers a solid, filling start to lunch. We ordered two loaded sandwiches to share at the table: the Cuddly Bacon and the black pepper beef sandwich.

When the wooden tray arrived at our table, the sheer size of the toasted stacks inside their branded cardboard sleeves was hard to miss. The Cuddly Bacon came packed tight with bacon strips, soft folded egg, melted cheese, a rich drizzle of mayonnaise, and finely chopped herbs, paired with a crispy hash brown on the side. The black pepper beef sandwich added a savory, hearty element to the table. To wash down the savoury stack, we ordered three drinks: a jasmine green tea, a fruit mango tea, and a rich mango cheese foam. Sitting back with hot stuffed toasts and icy fruit drinks gives you every reason to linger and catch up.

Building your own bowl at Yozo

No catch-up feels quite finished without dessert, so after finishing our sandwiches we walked across the open concourse to Yozo. Right by the front door, a small table holds complimentary sample cups so you can taste the daily frozen yogurt flavours before committing to a bowl. Since Yozo calculates price purely by weight, a standard cup usually comes out between $8 and $15 depending on how heavily you stack your toppings.

Once inside, soft-serve machines swirl fresh frozen yogurt directly into signature pink cups stamped with 'Yozo Made in Brisbane'. From there, you head to the topping counter to construct your bowl spoon by spoon. My personal must-have topping here is the Ferrero Dubai chocolate, a unique option I cannot find anywhere else. Scoopable, chocolaty, and wonderfully crunchy, it makes an indulgent anchor for the cup. We layered ours with crushed Oreos, warm chocolate sauce ladled straight over the yogurt, fresh strawberry slices, toasted coconut flakes, chopped cashews, and colourful candy chocolates before sitting outside at the circular white tables on the concourse.

Cold foam on tap and suburban convenience

Beyond the current sweet menu, Yozo is also preparing to introduce a new cold foam range alongside cold brew on tap at the Kelvin Grove store, matching what they have already rolled out at their other location. It adds another solid reason to keep this corner of the complex in mind when you need an icy caffeine pick-me-up between errands.

The wider centre at 57 Musk Avenue rounds out the visit with everyday essentials, housing a Woolworths Metro, a pharmacy, and beauty services alongside its dining options. Standard precinct trading hours run from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Saturday, and 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sundays, though individual shop hours can vary. Having two hours of free undercover parking takes all the friction out of a casual suburban catch-up.
