Wooden boats carrying sushi drift through a gentle mist along a water stream at Tsune Japanese Restaurant in Sanur. Rather than watching a typical conveyor belt loop around the room, we watched our dishes float straight down the river to the dining counter.

Set comfortably back from Sanur's busier main thoroughfares, Tsune brings a playful, interactive touch to Japanese dining in Bali. It creates an atmosphere where the theatre of presentation is built right into the stream.

Wooden Boats and Table Fog

Inside, the dining room feels cool and modern, anchored by an illuminated Tsune sign directly above the counter and textured menus embossed with the venue name. The water stream runs along the seating area, delivering small wooden boats that fly tiny paper flags while carrying pieces like Tamago Sushi Mentai and Crunchy Tuna Rolls.

The presentation extends beyond the water feature itself. Table dishes arrive with dense white fog swirling out from beneath stone serving lids, adding a theatrical layer to the start of the meal.

Flames from the Open Kitchen

The hot kitchen adds its own show, with flames leaping over the burners as chefs prepare cooked dishes. We ordered the crispy eggplant garnished with sliced red chili and green onion, lifting crispy, lightly garnished pieces off the plate.

Heartier mains kept the momentum going across the table. Chopsticks broke open a soft egg yolk over the pork katsudon and rice, while sliced beef ribeye arrived crowned with sauteed mushrooms, fresh herbs, and a dark pan sauce. Seared salmon, served with yuzu butter sauce, provided a lighter contrast to the richer rice bowls.
