Descending the white fabric-draped staircase into Central's basement dining space immediately sets a moody, elegant tone for an anniversary dinner in Brisbane City. Beneath raw concrete walls and illuminated kitchen ceilings, the atmosphere feels secluded and refined.

We began our evening at the bar with a round of drinks, choosing the Night Fever cocktail. Served in a coupe with an edible floral garnish, its fresh mix of yuzu, jasmine, peach, and prosecco provided a bright, citrusy start before the food arrived.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Is Central worth adding to your itinerary?

For the main course, the Cantonese Wagyu Chow Fun completely stole the show. Generous portions of stir-fried flat rice noodles came tossed with tender strips of beef, bean sprouts, and sesame seeds, bringing depth and texture to the table.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Menu highlights

Highlights from Zen’s visit.

At a glance: what we ordered

  • Night Fever cocktail
  • Wagyu beef tartare
  • Dim sum selection (Peking duck potstickers, pork buns, pork siu mai)
  • Barbecue pork puffs (two rounds)
  • Cantonese Wagyu Chow Fun
  • Steamed Asian greens

Flaky Pastry and Handcrafted Dim Sum

The entree spread moved quickly into a collection of dim sum, including pan-fried Peking duck potstickers with a crispy lacy skirt, tender pork siu mai, and half-cut pork bao buns filled with shredded meat. My husband also ordered the Wagyu beef tartare topped with fresh chives, which we scooped onto dark, crisp crackers.

The absolute highlight of the dim sum selection was the barbecue pork puffs. Encased in golden, flaky pastry layers filled with rich barbecue pork, these bite-sized morsels delivered such distinct bursts of flavour that we immediately put in an order for a second round.

A Hero Noodle Dish to Close

For the main course, the Cantonese Wagyu Chow Fun completely stole the show. Generous portions of stir-fried flat rice noodles came tossed with tender strips of beef, bean sprouts, and sesame seeds, bringing depth and texture to the table.

Paired alongside a plate of vibrant steamed Asian greens for fresh balance, the combination rounded out our celebratory meal seamlessly. Between the moody subterranean room and the thoughtful menu, Central gave us an anniversary dinner we will be remembering for years to come.
